What South African citizens need to prepare before a legal wedding ceremony.
The standard requirements
For South African citizens getting married, the process is straightforward. Both parties must provide valid proof of identity, arrange two adult witnesses, and work with a licensed marriage officer who will complete the DHA-24 register on the day.
Required for South African citizens
- South African identity document
The green ID book or smart ID card. Both are accepted. Your ID must be valid and in your possession on the day of the ceremony.

Both witnesses must be 18 years of age or older and must carry a valid South African identity document on the day. They do not need to be related to you.

If you have been previously married
You will need to provide proof that the previous marriage has legally ended. See the divorced and widowed guides for what is required in each case.
Antenuptial contracts
